National Conference on Corporate Governance Trends in India

Ministry
of Corporate Affairs (MCA) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)
in partnership with the Institute of Company Secretaries of India
(ICSI) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has
set up the National Foundation for Corporate Governance (NFCG).
Under
the aegis of NFCG, CII along with MCA and World Bank had organised a
daylong Conference, ‘1st National Conference on Corporate
Governance Trends in India’ on 18 October 2004 at New Delhi.
Mr Prem Chand Gupta, Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Company
Affairs, Government of India inaugurated the Conference. Ms. Komal
Anand, Secretary, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India,
delivered the Special Address, and Mr. Michael Carter, Country Director
– India, the World Bank, spoke on the recent World
Bank’s Corporate Governance country assessment of India.
Later in the Conference, Dr. Sheela Bhide, Joint Secretary, Ministry of
Corporate Affairs, Government of India, deliberated on the theme and
chaired one of the sessions.
Apart
from the Inaugural session, the Conference was divided into two other
sessions. Session 1 deliberated upon ‘ World Bank report on
the Observance of Standards and Codes: Key Findings on Corporate
Governance’. Ms. Mierta Capaul and Ms. Varsha Marathe from
World Bank, and Mr. Vipul Prakash from IFC
made the presentations.
In
Session 2 – ‘Corporate Governance Audit: Issues and
Challenges’, presentations were made by Mr. Amar Gill of CLSA
Ltd, Mr. J. Ravichandran of NSE,
Mr. Anjan Ghosh of ICRA,
and Ms. Roopa Kudva of
CRISIL. Mr. Chanrdajit Banerjee, ED
– NFCG and Sr. Director – CII, proposed a vote of
thanks and summarised the proceedings.
